Back to School in Northern Virginia: What Every County's Start Date Means for Your Move

Six school systems, six different first days. If you're buying, selling, or just trying to time a move around the school calendar, here's what's actually happening this year, county by county.

Kids walking to school with backpacks in a Northern Virginia neighborhood

Today's the day for a lot of Northern Virginia families. If it feels like half the neighborhood already went back to school and the other half is just now packing lunches for the first time, you're not imagining it. Our school districts don't line up on a single first day, and depending on which county or city you're in (or moving to), that date can land anywhere from mid-August to the first of September.

First day of school, by jurisdiction

Here's how the 2026-2027 school year is staggered across the areas we work in:

Stafford County: August 12

Loudoun County: August 17

Fairfax County: August 24

Prince William County: August 24

Alexandria City: August 24

Arlington County: August 31

Kids in Stafford and Loudoun have already had a week or two to settle into the routine. Today, Fairfax, Prince William, and Alexandria families are walking their kids in for the first time this year, and Arlington still has one more week of summer before its turn. If you're relocating across county lines this fall, that gap matters more than you'd think.

Why school boundaries matter more than county lines

One thing we tell every buyer with school-age kids: the county you're moving to matters less than the specific attendance zone. Two houses a half-mile apart can feed completely different elementary, middle, or high schools, and boundary lines don't always follow the roads or subdivisions you'd expect. Before you fall in love with a house, it's worth checking the exact assigned school through the county's official boundary locator rather than assuming based on the neighborhood name or a listing description. We do this for every family we work with, but it's also a five-minute check you can do yourself on any specific address.

Timing a move around the calendar

If you're trying to close before a specific first day of school, give yourself more runway than feels necessary. A "back to school move" usually means targeting a closing at least two to three weeks before the first bell, which gives you time to unpack the essentials, get the kids registered, and let everyone find their footing before the routine starts. If your closing lands closer than that, most districts have a process for enrolling while a home purchase is still in progress, typically accepting a ratified contract or settlement statement as proof of residency, but the specifics vary by district and it's worth calling the school's registrar directly rather than assuming. Don't wait until move week to find out what they need.

If you're selling into back-to-school season

Late August isn't the hottest month to list (we've written before about the best and worst months to sell in Northern Virginia), but if you're navigating a sale right alongside a new school year, a few practical things help: keep supply clutter and backpacks out of listing photos, try to schedule showings around drop-off and pickup rather than during it, and if you can, get your professional photos done before the first day chaos sets in rather than after. Buyers touring in September are often the same type of family you are, relocating around the school calendar, so a clean, organized home reads especially well to them right now.
